The Importance of Placement Tests
Congratulations! You're about to step into the world of college! As you may know, one of the first steps is to take the
Composition and Reading Placement Test (CRPT) and the Math Placement Test (MPT). These tests will determine your placement
in certain classes.

Placement Tests at YSU
Every YSU student is required to take at least two writing courses and most students will be required
to take one or more math courses. All students, of course, are required to read textbooks and study notes and classroom materials.
Therefore, to be sure that you are prepared to meet the rigors of college-level reading, writing, and mathematics, all entering freshmen are required
to take the CRPT and the MPT "placement tests" to determine the appropriate level to "place" you into these courses.
You may schedule the placement tests by calling:
Math: 330-941-3274
Writing: 330-941-3055
Please note the following items with regard to your placement test results:
- All YSU students take English 1550 (Composition 1) and English 1551 (Composition 2). However, about half of all students also take English 1540 (Introductory College Writing 2), and some students take English 1520 (Introductory College Writing 2) as well. Your placement into these courses is first determined by the writing portion of the CRPT). Note that if you start with English 1520, you must also take 1540, 1550, and 1551 (four courses in all); if you start with 1540, you'll take three courses in all. Thus, you should write as well as you are able to place as far along in the sequence as you can.
- Approximately one-third of the freshman class is found to be reading and comprehending college-level material with some difficulty based on the reading portion of the CRPT. Therefore, some students will be required to take either Ready and Study Skills 1510B (Introduction to College Reading) OR Reading and Study Skill 1510A (Intermediate College Reading and Study Skills). Generally, these additional courses do not count toward graduation, but will effect your grade point average.
- For some students, depending on your major, the MPT is one component in the math placement process. It is recommended that students check the following web site for details of the MPT as well as a sample copy (with answers) of the MPT:
http://www.math.ysu.edu/student _services_placement.htm. For viewing a sample test only, check:
http://www.as.ysu.edu/~math/Placement/samplea1.pdf
.
- To get your CRPT result, consult the advisors in the college of your major OR with a photo identification in hand request your results at the Writing Center (Coffelt Hall).
The tests are meant to ensure that you are prepared to take on the rigors of college. Those who need the special assistance should and will receive extra help. Thus, when you take the CRPT and the MPT be aware of the importance of the test; it will place you in courses as it is deemed necessary.
